PAST SIMPLE

One of the common mistakes that people make is to use the present perfect when they should use the past simple, and the past simple when they should use the present perfect.

*You use the past simple to talk about finished actions in the past , often with a time expression, e.g. yesterday, last week , in June, in 2001, five years ago , etc.

*You make the past simple positive form of regular verbs with the base form of the verb + ed. The form is the same for all persons.

*Some common verbs have irregular past simple forms .

Negatives and Questions

*You make the negative form of the past simple with didnt + base form of the verb. The form is the same for all persons.

*You make yes/no questions in the past simple with did/didnt + subject + base form of the verb. The form is the same for all persons.

*When who or what are the subject of a question, you dont use did/didnt + base form of the verb.

*You make past simple questions with a question word (what, where , who, when, how) + did + base form of the verb.

Spelling

*verbs ending in e: add d.

*verbs ending in y: change the y to I and add ed.

*verbs ending in one vowel + one consonant: double the consonant + ed.

*note that if the final syllable of a two-syllable word isn’t sressed. You don’t double the final consonant.

PRESENT SIMPLE

*You use the present simple to talk about habits and routines.

*You use the present simple to talk about things that are permanent or always true.

*You usually use the present simple (not the present continuous)with certain verbs, e.g. agree, believe, enjoy, hate, know, like, love, mean, prefer, remember, seem, think, understand, want, etc.

PRESENT CONTINUOUS

*You use the present continuous to talk about things that are happening now and things that are in the process of changing or developing.

*You use the present continuous to talk about things that are temporary.
